Village People group speaks of gay pride
To the Entertainment Editor:
Why disc jockeys insist on lisping and carrying on with the worn-out, stereotyped image of a gay man when introducing “YMCA” by the Village People is beyond me. The group is a breakthrough by reason of the fact that its members are homosexual and are in the top of the charts.
Musically they're an average disco/rock group, but nevertheless they are projecting a better (and far truer) image to the public of gay people. Who would even suspect that some weightlifter down the street was attracted to men?
Since music is one of the most important forms of communication today, it's quite exciting to know a group of people of a different lifestyle can communicate with the listeners.
We still have a long way to go in understanding ourselves and being socially accepted in the "straight" world. But it's great to know that the Village People are out there breaking the ice. Most important of all though, it's great to know there are millions of ears out there listening. In between those ears are the minds of the future.
